This rehousing project began with the renowned Canon 50mm f0.95 dream lens, originally designed and manufactured for stills photography in the early 1960s. At the time, it was the fastest produced lens for commercial use due to its single coated elements with an amber tint, earning it the unofficial title of dream lens. The lens has a beautiful character when used wide open, producing a creamy bokeh that is enhanced by the replacement circular iris in the rehousing process.
Although the lens was slightly late to the rehousing scene due to constraints of the cameras at the time, the adoption of the LPL mount provided enough mechanical freedom to begin rehousing. As interest in the 50mm f0.95 grew, requests for other lenses to match and create a set of Canon dream lenses emerged. TLS carefully selected Canon lenses from the same era with single coated elements and built a comprehensive set of 10 focal lengths ranging from 19mm to 135mm. These lenses have a unique look with a large amount of flares and lower contrast, and the fall off towards the edges of the frame is more pronounced when used on a full frame sensor.
The rehousing process also improved the close focus of the lenses, with the 19mm, 25mm, and 28mm all reaching less than 8 inches (20cm) from the film plane. The set is consistent in front diameter and focus and iris gear position in relation to the film plane, making it a versatile and convenient option for filmmakers.
